It was dark already. Stephen didn’t notice though. Philip had stepped aside, so Stephen could get through, and meet Ruth Beetle, who stood awkwardly in the doorway, in a long floral skirt, and matching pink top. | He watched her carefully, and though she did her best to hide it, she tensed a little when she saw him come into the entry way. But she didn’t scream, or tell him to go away, so that was a major improvement over the evening before. “Hi,” she said, clutching onto a box she held in her hands. “Hey,” Stephen replied with a nod of his head. He approached her cautiously and allowed for some space in between them. “Um,” she began, brushing her hair from her face. “I wanted to apologize to you. I’ve thought about nothing else all day and, no matter what,” – she took a breath to remain calm – “I thought I saw, you didn’t deserve how I treated you. I’m sorry.” She held out the box to him. “I brought a little peace offering.” Stephen took it from her, his head cocked to the side in mild confusion, and handed it over to Philip, who took it, and opened it. “It was my fault,” Stephen began. “I shouldn’t have – I never wanted to scare you like that.” Philip let out a snort as he peered underneath the lid of the box. Both Stephen and Ruth looked at him. “What is it?” Stephen said. Philip handed the box over to him, smiling appreciatively. Stephen looked under the lid. “Oh,” Stephen said. “It’s – yeah, it’s a bloody piece of meat in a Ziploc bag.” He smiled kindly at Ruth who had not been prepared for such an expression. But now that she was aware of it, she could see the distinct difference in his teeth than in a normal person’s. That was the main thing she remembered from the evening before – Stephen opening his mouth as he hissed like an animal, ready to bite Troy. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t get that image out of her head. “Well, it’s…top sirloin,” she said with a shrug. Philip burst into laughter, throwing his head back as Stephen chuckled. How could the monster from last night and the man standing in front of her now both be the same man? Ruth blushed, and shuffled her feet back a little. “Sorry,” she mumbled. “No, no, no,” Stephen said. “no, no, no. It’s just not – I can’t say that I’ve ever gotten a present like that before, that’s all.” Philip was still laughing. Ruth looked awkwardly at him, then back at Stephen who continuously kept his eyes on her. “I just don’t know what a –“ She stopped and stared at Stephen as though she still couldn’t quite believe it. Stephen nodded his head slowly. “Vampire.” “Yeah,” she said as Philip calmed down. “I think I’ll be going,” he said, still sniggering, and took the box with him as he left. “It’s really true,” Ruth said. “That’s really what you are now?” “Yes, that’s what I am,” Stephen said, and watched the shudder move through her body as he felt his own revulsion flash through him. - The Dying of the Light NaNoWriMo 2009 | |||
